The Science

- what makes the finish hold

Great surfaces come from what’s underneath: substrate conditions, build-up and junction detailing. Here’s how we approach performance and material choices—so specification is clear and handover is clean.

The technical side of seamless finishes

Seamless finishes don’t forgive shortcuts. Performance is set before the top coat—through careful assessment, preparation and the right build-up for the substrate and programme. We support teams before installation so tolerances, interfaces and sequencing stay buildable across trades.

What we focus on

01
Substrate checks: flatness, stability, moisture & constraints
02
System build-up: layers, compatibility & protection strategy (system-dependent)
03
Junctions & interfaces: thresholds, stairs, wet zones & adjacent trades—resolved early
04
Sequencing & curing: programme-aware planning so finishes aren’t compromised on site

Trusted partners

We work with proven systems from specialist manufacturers—so specification is reliable, documentation is clear, and performance is consistent.

Choosing natural finishes without guesswork

We prioritise mineral and natural-based systems where they make sense—because responsible materials still have to work on site.

Breathability and moisture behaviour are key (especially with clay and limewash) so we match the system to the substrate, usage and maintenance expectations.

Frequent Questions

001

At what stage of the project should we involve Space Affair?

Close icon.

The earlier, the better. We provide the most value during the design and planning phases. By reviewing your build-ups, junctions, and sequencing early, we ensure that the chosen seamless finishes remain buildable and durable across different trades.

002

Do you provide technical specifications for architects?

Close icon.

Yes. For every material system we offer—whether it’s Resistone microcement or Clayworks plaster—we provide full technical support, including buildup diagrams, substrate requirements, and data sheets (PDF). Our goal is to ensure the surface scope is fully integrated into your architectural drawings.

What is the difference between Clay Plaster and Clay Paint?

Close icon.

Clay Plaster is a thick, tactile material (available in Smooth, Demi-Rustic, and Rustic finishes) that regulates humidity and adds thermal mass to walls. Clay Paint (like Bauwerk Limewash) is a breathable, mineral-based coating that provides a unique, mottled aesthetic without the thickness of plaster. Both are 100% natural and VOC-free.

Can microcement be used in wet areas and bathrooms?

Close icon.

Absolutely. We use high-performance systems like Resistone and Forcrete, specifically engineered for wet environments. These systems are waterproof by nature (not just a top coating), making them ideal for seamless showers, floors, and vanity units where hygiene and durability are priority.

How do you manage the transitions between different materials?

Close icon.

Detailing junctions is our specialty. We coordinate with your site team to manage the "breaks" and transitions—where microcement meets timber flooring or clay meets cabinetry. Proper sequencing ensures these transitions are crisp, movement-tolerant, and aesthetically resolved.

006

Are your materials ecologically responsible?

Close icon.

Sustainability is core to our palette. We focus on mineral and natural-based systems. Our clay finishes from Costka and limewash from Bauwerk are non-toxic, breathable, and have a very low carbon footprint, contributing to a healthier indoor climate.

007

007

Do you offer a warranty on your surface systems?

Close icon.

Yes, we take end-to-end responsibility for our scope. As a family-led studio, we stay close to the work throughout the build and provide a clear warranty on both the material performance and the application, provided the substrates meet our technical requirements.

Can I order physical samples for my client presentation?

Close icon.

Yes. We believe seamless surfaces must be felt to be understood. You can request a bespoke sample pack through our contact form. We provide specific textures (Smooth/Rustic) and colour swatches to help you and your client make an informed decision.
